Different Types Of ACSR Conductors - Types And Advantages

ACSR stands for Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced, it is a stranded conductor that is more durable. It's typically used for transmission lines that run overhead. The conductor's exterior is constructed of pure aluminium, while the interior is built of steel. This conductor can be galvanized or coated with another substance to extend its life, to keep it from corroding. Steel has a higher strength than aluminium, allowing mechanical force to be applied over the conductor.

There are 4 main types of ACSR conductors and they are as follows:

1. AAC Conductors: All Aluminium Conductors, or AAC, are made up of numerous layers of concentrically stranded aluminum wires. These conductors are used in overhead lines with low, medium, and high voltage. AAC is frequently used in cities, where spans are often short yet great conductivity is required. AAC is a common conductor in coastal regions due to its exceptional corrosion resistance. AAC's employment in transmission lines and rural distribution is limited due to the long spans employed and its relatively low strength to weight ratio.

2. ACAR Conductors: ACAR is a transmission conductor that combines several aluminum alloy strands to provide outstanding electrical and mechanical balance qualities. Aluminum alloy wires are used to cover the aluminum strands. The number of strands is included in the core of the conductor. The fundamental advantage of this conductor is that all of the strands are identical, providing for the best electrical and mechanical qualities in the conductor design. When compared to an identical ACSR, AAC, or AAAC, ACAR offers improved mechanical and electrical qualities. ACAR is the optimum choice when ampacity, strength, and lightweight are the most important considerations of inline design due to a good balance between mechanical and electrical qualities.

3. AAAC Conductors: AAAC stands for All Aluminium Alloy Conductors. It is made up of many layers of aluminum alloys stranded in concentric layers, most commonly aluminum-magnesium-silicon. A high-strength aluminium alloy was employed to achieve a high strength-to-weight ratio, which allows for improved sag characteristics. All aluminium alloy conductors are commonly used for primary and secondary transmission in bare overhead distribution and transmission lines (11 kV to 800 kV lines) and HV substations. It can also be employed in extremely polluted industrial districts and coastal locations due to its corrosion resistance.

4. AACSR Conductors: AACSR is a concentrically stranded conductor made up of one or more layers of Aluminium-Magnesium-Silicon Alloy wire that are stranded around a high-strength coated steel core. A single wire or stranded multi-wire core can be used. AACSR is available with a Class A, B, or C galvanized steel core or an aluminium coated steel core (AW). Grease can be applied to the core or the entire cable might be infused with grease to provide additional corrosion resistance. Used as a primary and secondary distribution cable as well as a bare overhead transmission wire. For line design, AACSR provides the best strength. The use of variable steel core stranding allows for required strength without losing ampacity.

The advantages of ACSR conductors are as follows:

The conductor has high tensile strength.

Steel wires provide more reliability, ensuring the conductor's safety margins.

The strongest mechanical resistance, improved transport capacity, and high tensile strength are all advantages of this material.

The ACSR conductor is suitable for medium and long spans and requires minimal support.

Because of the large diameter of ACSR, the corona limit is high.

The cost of high-voltage overhead cables is significant.

By coating the steel wire with zinc, galvanic corrosion is prevented and steel wire is protected.

Because of their exceptional strength, they are used for overhead ground wires, river crossings, and long-span installation.

      Lightweight and cost-effective design.
